Phase 1 – Pre-installation inspectionThe correct installation of unglazed porcelain tiles always begins with a thorough visual inspection. For a homogeneous and balanced end result, it is important to open several boxes and mix the tiles from different packages. This ensures a natural distribution of color shades and nuances. The tiles are best laid randomly, unless it concerns a specific collection with numbered sheets or patterns that require a fixed sequence. Each tile must be carefully inspected for color, size, flatness, and possible manufacturing defects before installation. Once the tiles have been installed, they are deemed to have been accepted in their delivered condition. Any complaints regarding color deviations, size differences, or visible defects cannot be taken into consideration subsequently. All remarks must therefore be reported in writing prior to installation.Phase 2 – Laying the tilesThe quality of the final result depends to a large extent on the preparation of the substrate. It must be perfectly flat, clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, paint, or cement residue. There must also be no moisture infiltration or structural movement. If the substrate is uneven, it must be leveled beforehand with a suitable leveling mortar. For bonding unglazed porcelain tiles, an adhesive mortar specifically developed for tiles with very low water absorption is used. This type of adhesive provides stronger adhesion and prevents loosening during temperature fluctuations or intensive use. In most cases, this involves a flexible cement-based adhesive with added polymers. Use webercol plus S1 adhesive as the best choice. The adhesive is applied evenly using a notched trowel matched to the tile size. For tiles larger than 30 x 30 cm or in areas subject to heavy loads, such as kitchens or commercial floors, it is recommended to use the double bonding technique: both the substrate and the back of the tile are coated with adhesive. This guarantees coverage of at least ninety percent of the surface, which is essential for durable adhesion and prevents the formation of hollow spaces under the tile. Any excess adhesive in the joints must be removed immediately, as this complicates subsequent grouting.Phase 3 – GroutingAfter laying the tiles, the adhesive must fully cure before grouting can begin. The grouting not only serves an aesthetic function but also ensures watertightness, stability, and absorbs tension between the tiles. For unglazed porcelain tiles, a cement-based grout is preferably used, unless the application requires higher chemical resistance, for example in showers or commercial kitchens. In that case, an epoxy grout is recommended. Before applying the grout, all adhesive residue between the tiles is removed and the surface is carefully cleaned with a brush or vacuum cleaner. Next, the grout is mixed according to the manufacturer's instructions and applied in small batches so that it does not dry out during application. The grout is spread diagonally across the joints with a rubber trowel so that the joints are completely filled. Excess material is removed in diagonal movements, taking care not to apply too much pressure to avoid sagging. As soon as the grout begins to dry, the surface is wiped lightly damp with a sponge and clean water. The joints are not subjected to load until they have fully hardened. With light-colored tiles, the use of black or heavily pigmented grout is not recommended. This can cause staining that is difficult or impossible to remove, even with pretreatment. A grout width of two to three millimeters is generally ideal for non-rectified unglazed tiles.Phase 4 – Removal of cement hazeAfter grouting, a thin white haze often remains on the tiles, better known as cement haze. This haze is a residue of the grout that adheres to the surface after drying and attracts dirt. It is crucial to remove this film completely, because if the haze hardens, it becomes difficult to clean and can dull the natural appearance of the tile. The cleaning is carried out using an acid-based product specifically developed for removing cement and lime residue, such as Berdy P803 or a similar cement haze remover. First, the floor is swept dry to remove loose dust and dirt. Next, the grout is moistened to protect it from the acid. The cleaning product is then applied in small sections, left to act for a few minutes, and then scrubbed with a white pad or brush. It is important not to apply too much pressure to the grout and not to let the product dry out. After scrubbing, the surface is thoroughly rinsed with plenty of water, several times if necessary, so that all residues are neutralized. The use of strong acids such as hydrochloric acid or aggressive cleaners is strongly discouraged, as these can damage the grout and release harmful fumes.Phase 5 – Impregnate or sealOnce the floor is completely dry and free of cement residue, a protective layer can be applied. Unglazed porcelain tiles have a porous surface, allowing liquids and fats to penetrate the pores. An impregnating agent such as Berdy Impregna+ saturates these pores and prevents stains from penetrating the surface. This is particularly important in areas subject to moisture or soiling, such as bathrooms, kitchens, splashbacks, and outdoor applications. The sealer is applied evenly with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth. Preferably work in small sections of one square meter at a time and ensure the surface looks evenly damp. Use approximately 0.1 liter of product per square meter. It is recommended to wear gloves during application to avoid skin irritation. After impregnation, the surface must dry for at least six hours before being walked on again. For lasting protection, it is recommended to repeat the treatment every five years.Phase 6 – Regular maintenanceA well-maintained tiled floor retains its original appearance, even after years of use. Maintaining unglazed porcelain tiles requires no special products, but rather regularity and care. The floor is best cleaned weekly with Berdy Cerasol and lukewarm water. Using soft or softened water helps prevent limescale buildup. Always avoid products containing oil, wax, or acidic ingredients.Products based on linseed oil or black soap must be completely avoided, as they form a greasy layer that attracts dirt and settles in the pores of the tile. The use of fluorine-based acids, including hydrogen fluoride (HF), is also strictly prohibited because they can irreparably damage the tile. When the floor is subject to heavy use, for example in commercial spaces or kitchens, it is beneficial to perform a periodic deep cleaning with a slightly stronger, but still neutral product. Use Berdy Intens Clean for this purpose. This removes accumulated dirt without damaging the surface. A well-maintained floor requires less effort in the long run and retains its natural shine.Additional technical informationWhen calculating the required quantity of tiles, it is advisable to account for an average cutting loss of approximately ten percent. This also provides a reserve for future repairs or expansions.Since unglazed porcelain tiles are not rectified, slight dimensional variations may occur within the permissible tolerances according to the European standard EN 14411 and the French CSTB guidelines. It is therefore essential to maintain a joint width of at least two to three millimeters, with possible adjustment during installation.Color variations between production batches are normal and inherent to the use of natural raw materials. Therefore, a full shade guarantee can never be given for repeat orders or extensions to existing projects. For a uniform result, it is recommended to use all required tiles from the same production run. Finally, the tiles must always be stored in a dry and frost-free environment. Products bonded to paper or fiberglass mesh must not come into contact with moisture, as this can impair the adhesion of the mesh and complicate the installation process.
Zelliges and Their Origin
Zelliges are Moroccan tiles, each one handcrafted from unrefined natural clay extracted from the Fez region of Morocco. This clay is mixed and kneaded with water, shaped by hand, naturally dried, and fired in traditional wood-fired kilns.Because of this artisanal production process, variations in color, gloss, shape, thickness, and edge finish are inherent to the product. Small irregularities, hairline cracks (craquelé), and subtle shade differences between tiles are part of the authentic character of Zelliges.Your order may therefore differ slightly in color tone or size compared to the showroom samples or between different production batches. Lime spots, irregularities, and tonal variations in the tiles are natural characteristics of the product. All of these features contribute to the charm and uniqueness of Zelliges and cannot be considered grounds for returns or complaints. The showroom sample serves solely as an indicative example of the tile’s type and style. The glaze — a mixture of glassy compounds and mineral pigments — is applied to the tiles and then melted and vitrified during firing, resulting in a variety of semi-transparent, metallic, pearlescent, or translucent tones. The true essence of Zellige lies in its irregularity — in appearance, tone, flatness, thickness, gloss, depth, and surface color. Every Zellige tile is truly unique.Zellige Tile Installation For a harmonious result, it is important to open several boxes before installation and mix the tiles randomly. This creates a natural variation in tones and textures that brings out the typical charm of Zellige. Immerse the tiles for at least four hours in a bucket of cold or lukewarm water so they absorb water instead of drawing moisture from the adhesive.Make sure the wall is properly prepared: the surface must be clean, even, and dry before starting. Then apply the flexible ceramic adhesive Webercol Plus using a 6 or 8 mm notched trowel, both on the surface to be tiled and on the back of each tile.Zelliges can be placed without joints, edge to edge. Always use tile spacers if you want to achieve a uniform layout. The position of each tile can be adjusted by varying the adhesive thickness and the minimal joint space to create a balanced and harmonious composition. If you use spacers, they should not be thicker than 1.5 mm. On larger surfaces, over 10 m², spacers are recommended. For floor installations, it is advisable to leave a small joint to allow for possible movement or expansion of the surface. Zellige tiles can be easily cut or beveled with a diamond blade. A traditional tile cutter can also be used, although it generally produces less precise results. In areas with direct contact with water—such as showers, swimming pools, fountains, or countertops—the substrate must be completely waterproof. As with other glazed ceramics, tiling itself does not guarantee waterproofing: moisture may still penetrate through joints or small irregularities in the surface. When the adhesive is completely dry and the tiles are firmly fixed, grouting can begin. Use Mapei Ultracolor Plus grout and spread it evenly over the surface with a rubber float. Prepare the grout according to the manufacturer’s instructions and do not use Mapei Keracolor.Never use acid-based cleaners, as they can permanently damage terrazzo composites. Make sure all spaces between the tiles are completely filled. Then remove the excess grout with a damp sponge or cloth and correct any areas that lack filling. Once the grout begins to dry, remove the remaining residue with a dry cloth and polish the surface.Removing cement residue with Berdy P803 When the grout is completely dry — usually about three weeks after grouting — you can remove the remaining traces of cement haze. Use Berdy P803 cement residue remover for this purpose and follow the instructions provided in the product manual carefully.Outdoor use Zellige tiles, like other glazed ceramic products, are highly resistant to sunlight and UV exposure. Their color and shine remain intact even after prolonged exposure to the sun. However, the durability of an outdoor installation strongly depends on the quality of the substrate and the method of installation. It is important to use a suitable flexible adhesive and grout specifically designed for outdoor use. These materials help absorb thermal shocks and prevent cracking or detachment of the tiles.Weather resistance also depends on the waterproofing of the joints and the stability of the bond between the tiles and the substrate. If water seeps underneath the tiles, it can cause damage when temperatures fluctuate.Zellige tiles can be used outdoors in regions with a mild, frost-free climate. In areas subject to severe frost or strong temperature variations, however, the use of Zellige outdoors is not recommended, as it may lead to frost-related damage.Zellige maintenance
Glazed Zellige tiles are very easy to maintain and can be cleaned just like any other glazed ceramic tiles.Daily maintenance Clean the tiles with clean water and Berdy Cerasol. This preserves the natural shine of the glaze and keeps the colors vibrant.Use in humid areas Zellige tiles are suitable for use in wet areas such as bathrooms or showers. However, it is essential that the substrate is completely waterproof and that all edges are carefully sealed with Mapei Mapesil. This prevents moisture from seeping under the tiles and helps avoid damage caused by freezing or cracking.Products to avoid Do not use aggressive, acidic, or alkaline cleaning agents, as these can damage or dull the glaze. Also note that the Metallic Zellige range requires a specific installation and maintenance approach.
1. GeneralThe installation, cleaning, and maintenance of Topcer unglazed porcelain tiles largely follow the same principles as with other ceramic tiles, provided correct and modern installation techniques are used.2. Glue and installation materialsUse only adhesives and mortars specifically suitable for porcelain tiles, such as Mapei Keraflex S1 or Weber Col Plus, as these tiles have very low water absorption. Both adhesives are flexible C2TE S1 adhesives. Most adhesive manufacturers offer customized products for this purpose, often based on cement-sand mixtures with the addition of polymers or latex. These additives ensure stronger adhesion than standard adhesives for porous ceramics.3. JointsThe choice of jointing material depends on the required performance and the application:• Epoxy joints such as Mapei Kerapoxy easy design: for maximum chemical resistance, hygiene, and watertightness.• Cementitious grouts such as Mapei Ultracolor or Weber Webercolor: suitable for standard indoor and outdoor applications. When using dark cement grout on light tiles, it is advisable to apply a protective pre-treatment with Berdy imprenga+ to the tile surface beforehand to prevent discoloration. Even with protection, the use of black or anthracite-colored cement grout is discouraged.4. Cleaning after installationProper final cleaning after installation is essential for preserving the surface. All cement haze, adhesive, or grout residue must be completely removed as soon as the grout has hardened. Any residual layers of cement or grout (the so-called “film”) leave a porous haze on the tile surface that attracts dirt and makes maintenance difficult. For this first cleaning, use a suitable cement haze remover such as Berdy P803 cement haze remover and rinse thoroughly with clean water each time.5. Regular maintenanceTopcer unglazed porcelain tiles require no special treatment, but do require regular maintenance with neutral cleaning agents such as Berdy Cerasol. Avoid products containing acidic, oily, or corrosive components. For daily use, cleaning with warm water and a mild, pH-neutral maintenance product is sufficient. Always rinse thoroughly to prevent the accumulation of cleaning residue.6. Important recommendations• Never use acidic products on wet joints or cement-based surfaces.• Protect the floor from contamination by cement, paint, or adhesive residue during the work.• Always clean in small areas and dry afterwards with a microfiber cloth or wet vacuum.• Avoid prolonged contact with grease, oil, wine, or acids — remove spills immediately.SummaryCorrect installation, thorough initial cleaning, and regular maintenance are crucial for the lasting aesthetic and functional result of your Topcer floor or wall. By following these guidelines, you guarantee a durable, hygienic, and low-maintenance surface that retains its original appearance.
Natural stone and cement For the production of terrazzo tiles, a mixture of cement and natural stone is poured into molds and compressed under high pressure to form solid slabs or tiles. After hardening, the surface is machine-ground and polished to a smooth, even finish, revealing the decorative stone aggregates and creating a refined, elegant look. The result is a durable tile with an artisanal and timeless appearance. Due to this manual process and the required drying time, a delivery period of 2 to 3 months is perfectly normal. The origins of terrazzo date back to the 15th century in Venice, where craftsmen devised an ingenious method to reuse marble remnants. This iconic Italian tile style has been renowned since Roman times for its elegant appearance and unique character. Moreover, terrazzo is exceptionally strong, wear-resistant, and easy to maintain. Today, terrazzo has become a true eye-catcher in the world of interior design. From washbasins to decorative objects, from kitchen countertops to impressive floors — the terrazzo look has become a timeless staple in our living spaces.Terrazzo tiles are handcrafted from pigmented cement and natural stone. As a result, variations in color, texture, grain size, and the concentration of visible stone fragments are inevitable. Differences between the delivered product and the showroom sample may therefore occur and cannot be considered grounds for complaints, returns, or exchanges. The showroom sample serves only as an indicative example.Where to Install Terrazzo Tiles
Terrazzo tiles can be used in all indoor areas – from the kitchen and bathroom to the hallway, living room, or toilet. They bring a stylish and timeless look to every space. Please note: we advise against installing terrazzo tiles on the floor of a walk-in shower or outdoors, as moisture and temperature variations can damage the material.Terrazzo Tiles and Underfloor HeatingIs terrazzo suitable for use with underfloor heating? Absolutely. Terrazzo tiles and underfloor heating form an excellent combination. Thanks to its dense structure, terrazzo conducts heat exceptionally well, allowing the floor to warm up quickly and feel pleasant even on cold days. Terrazzo is therefore an excellent heat conductor. When installing terrazzo on underfloor heating, it is important to take several points into consideration:
• Use our flexible white tile adhesive Webercol Plus Project or Weber Col XXL Delight, which is resistant to temperature fluctuations to prevent cracks or fractures.
• For underfloor heating, place the Weber Sys Flex decoupling mat between the substrate and the tile. This prevents tension caused by expansion and contraction during temperature changes, protecting your floor from damage.Installing Terrazzo TilesPreparation• Upon receipt and before installation, carefully check all tiles for color, size, and any irregularities. Installed tiles are considered accepted and can no longer be subject to complaints or claims.
• Allow the tiles to acclimatize in a well-ventilated area: remove the packaging and place the tiles upright against a wall. Make sure the tiles are completely dry before installation.
• We recommend installing terrazzo tiles within four weeks of the production date for the best result.
• Clean both the front and back of each tile thoroughly before beginning installation. • Impregnate the top and sides of each tile to prevent stains during installation or grouting. Do this by applying at least two coats of Berdy Impregna Plus using a lint-free, uncoloured microfiber cloth, brush, or roller. Shake the container well before use and pour the product into a paint tray. Apply a thin layer — the thinner the layer, the more even the result. After about ten minutes, remove the excess product with a clean microfiber cloth, leaving only the protective layer. Allow at least six hours of drying time between coats and before grouting. Berdy Impregna Plus provides long-lasting protection, does not form a film, and remains completely invisible, ensuring your floor stays beautifully maintained for years.Substrate
A perfect preparation of the substrate is essential for a durable and stable result. Always check the type of substrate before you start. Is it a porous, absorbent substrate such as anhydrite screed, or a traditional cement screed?Always adapt your working method and the products used to the specific type of substrate to ensure optimal adhesion and durability.Installation
Laying pattern: measure the room carefully and draw clear reference lines on the floor to ensure precise alignment during installation.
• It is best to lay terrazzo tiles in a stack bond or ¾ bond pattern for a visually balanced and stable result. • Avoid using a ½ bond pattern, as this can create tension in the surface.
• Large-format tiles should always be installed in a stack bond pattern to prevent cracks and unevenness.Adhesion
Since terrazzo tiles contain pieces of natural stone, it is best to use white flexible tile adhesive such as Webercol Plus or Weber Col XXL Delight. The white color prevents discoloration of the tiles. The adhesive should be smooth and plastic, not too dry. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when preparing the adhesive. Begin installation from a main visual line or a prominent corner in the room to ensure a harmonious layout. Work systematically and maintain a joint width of 2 mm using a leveling system. It is highly recommended to use double adhesion to ensure full adhesive transfer and prevent hollow spots beneath the tiles. Apply enough adhesive to the substrate using an appropriate notched trowel, and spread a thin layer on the back of the tile. Carefully place the tile, press lightly, and adjust if necessary. Once properly positioned, gently tap it with a white rubber mallet. Use a spirit level and leveling system to avoid height differences. Finish the edges with cut pieces, preferably cut using a water-cooled tile saw. Immediately remove adhesive residue with a damp cloth to prevent staining.Grouting
• After installation, allow the tiles to dry for at least 7 to 8 days with open joints before grouting. Use our acid-free, flexible grout Mapei Ultracolor Plus. Note: do not use Mapei Keracolor. Prefer a light or tone-on-tone grout color to prevent discoloration of the tiles. Do not use epoxy-based grout for terrazzo tiles.
• Carefully follow the manufacturer’s mixing instructions and ratios, and fill the joints diagonally using a rubber float. • Small surface cracks or tiny fissures around the stone aggregates result from the natural shrinkage of the cement during the drying of terrazzo tiles and are therefore normal. By grouting the entire surface of the terrazzo tile with Mapei Ultracolor Plus and not just the visible joints, you fill these microcracks and prevent the small stones from coming loose or the cracks from widening later. • About 30 minutes after grouting, gently remove the excess material with a slightly damp sponge, without rinsing out the joints. Ensure that the joints remain properly filled. • Wall and edge joints should not be filled with adhesive. Leave a minimum expansion joint of 4 mm between walls, steps, and other fixed elements to absorb tension.Removing cement residue with Berdy Cena
When the floor is completely dry — usually about three weeks after grouting — you can remove the remaining traces of cement haze. Use Berdy Cena cement residue remover for this purpose. Follow the instructions provided with the product carefully. Never use acid-based cleaners, as these can permanently damage the terrazzo composite.Cleaning terrazzo tilesOnce the cement haze has been completely removed, you can begin the deep cleaning of your terrazzo floor. Use Berdy Piraat, a powerful yet acid-free cleaner that is safe for composite and natural stone surfaces. Dilute the product with clean water according to the dosage on the packaging and distribute it evenly over the floor. Let it act for 5 to 10 minutes, but never allow it to dry. Then rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all residues. For optimal results and a perfectly maintained floor, you may repeat this cleaning step if necessary. Afterward, let the floor dry for 24 to 48 hours before using it again or applying any further treatment.Protecting terrazzo tilesWhen the terrazzo floor is completely clean and dry, apply a final coat of Berdy Impregna Plus. The application method is identical to that of the first two coats.Maintaining terrazzo tilesFor the maintenance of natural stone such as terrazzo, there are two cleaning methods: dry cleaning and wet cleaning. This is also known as light periodic maintenance and is generally done daily or weekly, depending on the room’s usage.Dry cleaning: Use a soft broom, vacuum cleaner, or floor mop to remove dust and loose dirt. Place a good doormat at the entrance to prevent sand and dirt from entering the house and scratching the surface.Wet cleaning: Fill a bucket with lukewarm water and add a small amount of Berdy Topbril. Clean the floor with a mop and allow the product to dry naturally without rinsing. This way, your terrazzo floor will retain its shine and remain well protected for a long time.
Artisanal and HandcraftedOur cement tiles originate from Italy. They are produced in a traditional, artisanal manner and are designed to please the eye. Each tile is handmade and hand-coloured, giving your interior a unique and characterful appearance.Due to the manual production process, slight variations in thickness, shade, or shape may occur. These small irregularities are considered normal and make each tile authentic and charming.Minor colour differences between the delivered tiles and those displayed in the showroom are therefore normal and cannot be considered grounds for complaint.Whether your style is modern, rustic, timeless, or Art Deco — cement tiles suit every interior. They bring back the atmosphere of the past and recall the charm of grandmother’s time, especially in kitchens, hallways, and bathrooms — spaces full of life and activity.Note: prolonged exposure to direct sunlight is not recommended, as it may cause fading of colours.Traditional Production ProcessA mixture of marble powder, cement, and colour pigments is poured into a mould with the desired pattern. Before the mixture fully hardens, the mould is removed. A thick layer of cement is then poured over it, and the whole is pressed under high pressure and left to dry for several weeks. The coloured top layer is approximately 4 mm thick, ensuring exceptionally durable tiles that, with proper maintenance, can last for centuries. Due to this manual process and the required drying time, a delivery period of two to three months is normal.PreparationStore the cement tiles in a dry area and carefully inspect them upon delivery. Once installed, the tiles are deemed accepted and cannot be subject to any complaints. Please note that slight variations in size and colour tone are inherent to this handmade product. Before starting the installation, it is recommended to create a layout plan or follow the provided installation drawing. Work preferably from the centre of the room to maintain as many full pattern tiles as possible.Work cleanly and carefully: remove dirt, adhesive, and grout residues immediately to avoid time-consuming cleaning later.InstallationAdhesionDepending on the substrate, first apply a primer such as Weber Prim Tac or Weber Prim Bond.Always use a white adhesive mortar such as Webercol Plus Project or Webercol XXL Delight.Lightly moisten the back of the cement tile to improve adhesion. Then use a notched trowel (minimum 6 mm) to spread the adhesive evenly. Aim for a narrow joint of approximately 2 mm to enhance the beauty of the pattern. When installing skirting tiles, ensure that the joints align neatly.CuttingAlways use a water-cooled diamond saw when cutting cement tiles. The surface layer consists of marble and granite, materials that require precision and cooling to prevent cracking or damage.Protection Before GroutingBefore grouting, the floor must be impregnated once with Berdy Impregna+. Make sure the surface is completely dry and clean. One coat is sufficient — never apply multiple layers.Impregnate the top and sides of each tile to prevent staining during grouting. Apply one thin coat of Berdy Impregna+ using a lint-free, uncoloured microfiber cloth, brush, or roller. Shake the container well before use and pour the product into a paint tray. Apply a thin layer — the thinner the layer, the more even the result. After approximately 10 minutes, remove any excess product with a clean microfiber cloth so that only the protective layer remains. Allow the surface to dry for at least 6 hours before grouting.Berdy Impregna+ provides long-lasting protection, forms no film, and remains completely invisible, allowing you to enjoy a perfectly maintained floor for years.GroutingAfter bonding and protection, let the tiles dry for at least 7–8 days with open joints before grouting.Use our acid-free, flexible grout Mapei Ultracolor Plus. Attention: do not use Mapei Keracolor. Choose preferably a light or tone-on-tone colour to avoid staining of the cement surface.Avoid dark grey or black grout, as these dark pigments can cause persistent stains in cement tiles. Grout one square metre at a time and refresh the rinse water frequently. Work slowly and carefully so the surface remains clean. The cleaner the work during grouting, the easier the final cleaning will be.Do not use epoxy-based grout for cement tiles.Finish any expansion or movement joints with our acid-free, mould-resistant silicone Mapei Mapesil LM.After InstallationCleaningWhen the floor is completely dry — typically about 3 weeks after grouting — you can begin cleaning and protecting the surface. First, check for the presence of any cement residue. If cement residue is present: Use Berdy CENA, a cement residue remover specifically designed for lime-containing tiles. Use it very carefully. For best results, treat one tile with pure product and the adjacent tile diluted according to the dosage indicated on the container. Both should yield the same result; if not, adjust the ratio. Always work on small areas and ensure the product is evenly spread. If no cement residue is present: For deep cleaning (after removing residue or if none is present), use Berdy PIRAAT. This product removes all heavy dirt. Always test one tile with pure product first, rinse thoroughly, and then treat the next tile with the recommended dilution. If the result is satisfactory, continue with the entire floor — but never treat large surfaces at once.ImpregnationAs cement tiles are porous, it is recommended to protect the surface once again after cleaning to prevent the penetration of dirt and stains. When the floor is completely clean and dry, apply another coat of Berdy Impregna+ using the same method as the first layer. Please note that acid stains (e.g., from wine, vinegar, or fruit) remain unavoidable.MaintenanceCement tiles are very porous and delicate. This valuable investment requires proper and sustainable maintenance.Regular cleaning with Berdy TOPBRIL ensures natural protection, nourishment, and degreasing of your cement tiles, maintaining their beauty and longevity.Important Notes• Be careful with scaffolding, ladders, and heavy materials: the floor remains sensitive after installation.• If protection is necessary, cover the floor with cotton sheets — never with plastic, cardboard, or paper.• Avoid scratches caused by tools or ladders.• A cement tile gradually densifies over time through maintenance and only reaches full compactness after a while.• Even after impregnation, the tile remains sensitive to acidic stains from wine, vinegar, or fruit.During the first few months, the floor continues to saturate. In kitchens, it is recommended to place a mat near the cooking area; it may be removed after about two months.Never use bleach, chlorine, or acid-based cleaners, and be cautious with vinegar, tea, or wine — wipe up any spills immediately.Cement tiles continue to harden after installation and gradually develop a beautiful natural patina that enhances their charm and character.General MaintenanceBy maintaining the cement tiles regularly after impregnation (mopping, gentle cleaning), the surface gradually becomes denser, the colour deepens, and the overall appearance gains richness and eleganceApplicationsCement Tiles with Underfloor HeatingAre cement tiles suitable for underfloor heating? Absolutely. Cement tiles and underfloor heating are an excellent combination. Thanks to their dense structure, cement tiles conduct heat very efficiently, allowing the floor to warm up quickly and feel pleasant even on cold days. Cement tiles are therefore excellent heat conductors. When installing on underfloor heating, it is important to observe the following:• Use our flexible white adhesive Webercol Plus Project or Webercol XXL Delight, which can withstand temperature variations and prevent cracking.• Install the Weber Sys Flex Roll decoupling mat between the substrate and the tile. This prevents stress caused by expansion and contraction during temperature changes and protects your floor from damage.• Avoid large temperature fluctuations both during and after installation to prevent tension and cracking.• The heating system must be switched off at least 24 hours before tilingCement Tiles OutdoorsUsing cement tiles outdoors is not recommended. Exposure to sunlight and weather conditions can cause discolouration. While initially slight, this becomes more visible over time.Cement Tiles in Public SpacesWhen used in public spaces such as restaurants, shops, or other high-traffic areas, we recommend maintaining the floor with a floor polishing machine. This ensures deep cleaning, preserves the natural sheen, and extends the life of the surface.Cement Tiles in Walk-In ShowersThe use of cement tiles in a walk-in shower is not recommended. Although technically possible, hard water inevitably leads to limescale deposits that cannot be completely removed. This issue can only be minimised by installing an anti-limescale system and drying the floor after each use.
TerracottaTerracotta refers to clay that is fired unglazed at very high temperatures. Terracotta has been used as flooring for over a thousand years. It is therefore a durable material that effortlessly stands the test of time. Terracotta exudes craftsmanship and natural charm, giving every interior a warm, authentic look.Benefits of terracottaToday, we are increasingly opting for sustainable and ecological materials — and with terracotta, you are making an excellent choice. This tile is created through a simple production process using only clay and high temperatures, contains no toxic substances, and is manufactured in an environmentally friendly manner. In addition, terracotta is an excellent thermal buffer: the tile retains heat well, making it ideal for homes with underfloor heating. Moreover, terracotta is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, and brings a warm, natural atmosphere everywhere.Handmade terracotta tilesOur terracotta tiles are handcrafted from clay. As a result, they are porous, and slight variations in shape, pattern, and color may occur. Minor efflorescence or lime deposits are also possible. When treated correctly, the floor is easy to maintain, although terracotta remains a natural material into which stains can slightly penetrate. It is an authentic, lively floor that develops character and charm over time — and that is precisely part of its unique appearance.Installing terracotta tilesPreparation and substrate• Only lay the floor when all other construction work has been completed. This prevents unnecessary soiling or damage to the tiles. • Ensure a flat and stable subfloor before starting the installation.Placement• Without underfloor heating: bond the terracotta tiles with our flexible adhesive such as Webercol plus project white. • With underfloor heating: use Webercol XXL Delight White for optimal adhesion and flexibility.(Never lay terracotta tiles in mortar or cement.) Use a coarse notched trowel of at least 15 mm to compensate for any thickness differences between the tiles. Always work neatly and carefully, and ensure that no adhesive or grout residue remains on the tiles.BondingBecause terracotta tiles show slight variations in size, it is difficult to lay them entirely by eye. Therefore, it is better to work in sections so that any deviations are evenly distributed. The grout serves to accommodate these dimensional variations, meaning it will not be exactly the same width everywhere — this is part of the artisanal character of a terracotta floor.JointsTerracotta is grouted with a ready-to-use grout specially developed for this type of tile: Mapei Ultracolor plus.Beforehand, it is important to treat the tiles with Berdy Impregna+. This product forms a protective layer on the terracotta tiles during grouting, ensuring that grout and adhesive residue adheres less and is easier to remove afterwards. Preparation with Berdy Impregna+ • Dry mop the floor to remove fine dust. • Apply Berdy Impregna+, diluted with water, to an area of approximately 4 m² at a time. Repeat this twice. Ensure that only the tile surface is treated — do not allow the product to run into the joints, as this will prevent the grout from adhering properly later. • Allow to dry for at least 1 hour before proceeding.Grouting • Wet the tiles thoroughly before you begin grouting. • Use Mapei Ultracolor plus for grouting. Grout an area of ± 2 m² at a time and clean immediately with a sponge and clean water. • Rinse thoroughly with clean water.Expansion joints Finish the expansion joints with a mold-resistant, acid-free silicone, such as Mapei mapesil LM.TIPS • Clean the floor immediately after grouting an area of ± 2 m² — this saves a lot of work later. • Do not cover the floor after installation: moisture must be able to evaporate. • After about two weeks, the terracotta floor can be impregnated with Berdy impregna+ (indoor use only).Cleaning, protecting, and maintaining terracottaTerracotta literally means 'baked earth'. The warm tones and soft surface give these tiles their unmistakable Mediterranean charm.Terracotta is made from clay fired at approximately 900°C, resulting in a thick, porous tile. Proper treatment during and after installation is therefore essential to obtain a low-maintenance and durable floor. After installation, use Berdy Cena cement haze remover (diluted 1:10) to remove cement haze and lime residue from the terracotta tiles. This ensures the tile is thoroughly cleaned and prepared for impregnation. Wait at least two weeks after bonding before starting the impregnation process. For heavy soiling, such as construction debris or efflorescence, use Berdy clean plus or Berdy piraat. Marble is a premium natural stone known for its luxurious appearance and unique veining, which gives each piece an exclusive and timeless character. As a calcareous and relatively porous material, marble is sensitive to acids and staining, which makes proper installation and appropriate maintenance essential to preserve both its beauty and durability over time. The substrate on which marble is installed must always be stable, dry, level and sufficiently load-bearing. A cement-based screed or a suitable leveling compound provides the ideal base, provided that the residual moisture content complies with applicable standards in order to prevent issues such as detachment or deformation. In the presence of underfloor heating, it is essential to follow the heating protocol correctly to avoid stress within the material. For the installation of marble, a white adhesive specifically designed for natural stone must always be used. The use of a white adhesive is crucial to prevent staining or shadowing, especially with lighter marbles. For larger formats or applications requiring optimal adhesion, a double bonding method is recommended to ensure full contact between the stone and the substrate and to eliminate hollow areas.Grouting of marble must be carried out using a product suitable for natural stone that does not cause discoloration. The grout color should be carefully selected in harmony with the stone to maintain the overall aesthetic. Expansion joints must always be respected at transitions, doorways and larger surfaces, as well as existing structural joints, in order to prevent stress and cracking. After installation, an initial deep cleaning is required to remove cement residues, grout haze and construction dirt. This cleaning should ideally be carried out two to three weeks after grouting to allow sufficient curing time. For this step, Berdy (Cena) is used, as it effectively removes cement residues without damaging the marble surface. The product is applied according to the instructions, lightly worked into the surface and thoroughly rinsed with clean water to ensure that no residue remains. As marble is a porous natural stone, it is strongly recommended to protect the surface against the penetration of liquids and dirt. This protection is achieved by applying Berdy (Impregna+), which penetrates deeply into the pores and creates an invisible protective barrier without altering the natural appearance of the stone. This treatment reduces liquid absorption and significantly improves stain resistance. For daily maintenance of marble, Berdy (Cerasol) is used, a gentle cleaner that cleans the surface without leaving any film or residue. The product is diluted in water and applied using a soft mop or microfiber cloth.
