Zelliges bring the authentic southern atmosphere of the Maghreb into your interior. They were originally manufactured exclusively using clay from the Moroccan city of Fez. Zelliges, also known as Moroccan wall tiles, are handmade glazed tiles made from a light, usually white type of clay.
They have an irregular surface and are usually finished with a semi-transparent glaze. Because the tiles are handmade, they acquire a unique character. With zelliges, you can decorate not only walls but also floors or furniture.During the production process, the clay is shaped by hand, coated with a layer of enamel, and fired in a traditional wood-fired kiln. This creates the typical, nuanced color because the temperature inside the kiln is not uniform. Afterward, each tile is manually cut into the desired shape.
In modern bathrooms, white and grey zelliges or zelliges in natural colours will look stunning. In country-style bathrooms, rustic colours are highly recommended, while pastel colours are ideal for retro bathrooms. Moreover, zelliges are also available in brighter colours, allowing you to work perfectly with colour accents. The installation of Zelliges
Installing Zelliges requires more attention than classic wall tiles. Due to the color variations, it is important to always mix a few tiles from different boxes during installation. Although Zelliges are often installed without grout, we strongly advise against this. Grout absorbs tension and prevents the tiles from cracking.
In addition, it is important to install the zelliges on a sturdy, load-bearing wall. This wall must be clean, dry, and flat. Furthermore, a treatment with Berdy Impregna+ is recommended to facilitate the maintenance of the zelliges.
